Video anonymization
Video anonymization (UK: video anonymisation) is the word labs, hospitals, and ethics boards use when they need footage that can be shown, archived, or published without re-identifying people. Redaction is the legal-office synonym. The difference is not a second product — it is the audience. This page is for the research and clinical wording; counsel looking for disclosure workflows should use FOIA or GDPR.
Anonymization is an outcome claim — not a marketing synonym dump
Ethics protocols often ask whether shared clips are anonymized: can a reasonable viewer re-identify participants from faces, badges, voice, or context? Redaction is the technique (cover the pixels / mute the span). Anonymization is the claim your board may or may not accept after review. Video Blackout does not stamp “anonymous” on a dataset. It gives you a burned-in derivative so the claim, if you make it, rests on covers that cannot be toggled off in a player.
What ethics review actually asks for
- Processing under the institution’s control, not a consumer cloud account
- An export that cannot be “unmuted” by turning off a subtitle-like overlay
- A repeatable method: faces, and often badges, charts, and corridor signs
- Separation of the identifiable master from the shareable derivative

A practical lab / clinical path
- Keep identifiable masters in the approved system of record (PACS-adjacent store, lab NAS, etc.).
- Copy only the span needed for teaching, publication, or secondary analysis to a licensed PC.
- Cover faces with face redaction (auto-detect plus manual boxes). Keep a participant clear only if the protocol explicitly allows it.
- Cover plates in exterior shots with license plate blur. Cover badges, monitors, and paperwork under PII video redaction (manual regions).
- Mute spoken identifiers with manual audio ranges — there is no automatic speech detection.
- Export the anonymized derivative. Circulate that file; do not share the master “because Drive is internal.”
Anonymization vs sharing raw CCTV “internally”
Sharing raw ward or lab video on an internal Drive is still a distribution of identifiers. Access control is not anonymization. An anonymized export is a new file where covers are permanent. If a collaborator later needs the identifiable master, they request it under the same governance that allowed collection — they should not reverse a blur that was never designed to reverse.

- You still write the protocol. Local processing and irreversible export are the technical controls boards usually ask vendors to document.
