Offline video redaction

Offline video redaction means the original clip never becomes a network payload. Video Blackout is on-premise software in the practical sense: it is a Windows executable, not a browser uploader and not a GPU farm in another country. That is the requirement for evidence rooms, school districts, and any buyer whose policy forbids “just this once” cloud processing.

On-premise video redaction: data residency

Security questionnaires ask where the file lives during processing. Answer with a table, not a slogan:

Asset Where it stays Notes
Source MP4 / MOV Local disk you opened Never posted to this website
Detection models Shipped with the installer, run in-process No media round-trip to a model API
Working previews Local memory / temp on the PC Under the operator’s OS account
Redacted export Local path you choose Burned-in pixels and optional muted audio
Account email / hardware ID This website, for licensing only Not the video content
Payment metadata Payment provider (e.g. Waffo / Creem) Subscription state only

No internet required for the work itself

Air-gapped use is a first-class scenario, not a footnote. Activate a device when the PC can reach this site, then disconnect. Opening files, proposing face and plate boxes, drawing manual regions, marking audio ranges, and exporting all run locally. There is still no “try it in the browser” path, because that path would be an upload — the opposite of offline video redaction.

IT teams often split the network story: a kiosk or jump box may reach the licensing site once; the evidence LAN never does. Video Blackout is built for that split.

Offline vs. “private cloud” SaaS

Some vendors market a “private tenant” that still receives your upload. That can satisfy a checkbox about encryption in transit and still create a second copy of unredacted evidence outside your building. On-premise video redaction here means the processor is the workstation under your physical and administrative control. If your DPIA or FOIA technical narrative must name a region, name the room — not a vendor bucket.

Criminal justice video stays on a machine you administer

Agencies that handle criminal justice information are often told, in FBI CJIS policy and in their own security addenda, to control where that information lives. Video Blackout is not a CJIS certification and it does not file your audit. The practical test for footage is simpler: the unredacted file does not leave for a vendor editor. Detection, tracking, and export run on the Windows PC that opened the copy. Licensing traffic to this website is account data, not the video.

Cloud video editing is still an upload

“Cloud video editing” and “redact online” both mean the file goes to someone else’s computer first. A private tenant and a browser tab can both do that. If the security review already forbids that path, the workstation is the processor. The comparison for staff who ask for a website tool is redact online versus offline.

Who should insist on offline

  • Agencies preparing FOIA video redaction
  • DPOs answering DSAR / GDPR requests that include CCTV
  • Evidence units finishing bodycam disclosures
  • Schools and facilities exporting CCTV for parents or insurers
  • Any IT review that already banned consumer editors for evidence

What offline does not mean

Offline does not mean “no account.” You still subscribe and bind devices on this site. It does not mean “no human review” — face and plate assist still need an operator. It does not mean the export is reversible; burned-in covers stay burned in. Product packaging and evaluation language live on video redaction software. FAQ

Is on-premise video redaction the same as offline?
For Video Blackout, yes: the application runs on a machine you control. We do not host a processing cluster you send files to.
Does the desktop app need the internet to redact?
Not for opening files, detecting, tracking, or export. Sign-in and license refresh use this website; after activation you can work disconnected.
Does videoredaction.io ever receive my video?
No. The site is for accounts, billing, and download. There is no upload endpoint for footage.
Can we use this on an air-gapped evidence PC?
Yes after the device is licensed. Activate when the PC can reach this site (or follow your IT’s offline activation process), then disconnect for day-to-day redaction.
Where do detection models run?
On the same Windows PC, in-process with the app. Models ship with the installer; they are not called as a cloud API over your media.
