Why the export cannot be “un-redacted”
Player privacy modes and many cloud tools only draw a temporary cover. Ours is different: the release file no longer contains the clear pixels.
- Redaction is written into the video frames themselves — not a layer you can turn off later
- Editors and forensic viewers cannot peel off a mask to restore the original face or plate from the export
- Solid fill overwrites the region completely; mosaic and blur destroy the clear source pixels in that area

- Does Video Blackout upload my video?
- No. The desktop app processes local files on your Windows PC. This website is for accounts, billing, and downloads — it does not accept video uploads.
- What can it redact automatically?
- Faces and license plates support on-device auto-detect plus manual boxes. Other on-screen identifiers (badges, screens, paperwork) are drawn by the operator. Audio is marked as mute or beep ranges by hand — there is no speech recognition.
- Can someone remove the redaction with image or AI tools?
- No. Export rewrites the marked pixels themselves (mosaic, blur, or solid) and encodes a new H.264 file. There is no privacy overlay, mask track, or hidden clear copy inside the export that editors or “deblur” tools can peel off. Solid fill destroys the region entirely. Keep your original file if you still need an unredacted master.
- Is the export reversible?
- No. The release copy permanently replaces those pixels and rewrites selected audio. We do not offer deblur or un-redact. The only unredacted master is the original file you kept separately.
- Can I work offline / air-gapped?
- Yes. After install and license activation, you can redact without internet. Ideal for evidence rooms and locked-down networks.
- How does licensing work?
- Subscribe on the web, then bind the license to a hardware ID in the desktop app. Free works without an account (with watermark and length limits). Paid plans remove the watermark and raise device / length limits.
- What export format do I get?
- Hard-coded H.264 MP4. That keeps playback simple for counsel, courts, and records portals that expect a standard file.

Video Blackout is desktop video redaction software for teams that must finish that work before a public records release, a DSAR response, or an internal review. Processing stays on the machine that opened the file. This site (videoredaction.io) does not accept uploads.
