V Video Blackout

Blur license plate

Blur license plate is the high-volume how-to behind bodycam car parks, school pick-up lanes, and dashcam handovers. License plate blur, blur number plate, and blur licence plate are the same pixels: the registration that would identify a bystander’s vehicle in a disclosure file.

Definition: auto-detect plus manual boxes

Video Blackout treats a plate as a tracked region with two entry points. Auto-detect proposes plate boxes on the PC that opened the file. Manual boxes are drawn when glare, dirt, an extreme angle, or a foreign plate style defeats the detector. You then follow the plate through the shot and burn mosaic, blur, or a solid into the export so a YouTube upload or a FOIA package does not leak a registration.

This is not a still-image editor. Plates rotate, leave frame, and re-enter. Use a track rather than a single static rectangle unless the camera is locked.

Video Blackout capabilities

Identifier Auto-detect Manual
Faces Yes — on-device detector Yes — draw or adjust boxes; keep or redact per person
License plates Yes — on-device detector Yes — draw or track boxes
Other on-screen PII No Yes — static or tracked regions (badges, screens, paperwork)
Audio No — no speech recognition Yes — operator marks time ranges; mute or beep on export

Where plates show up

  • Bodycam — traffic stops, parking lots
  • CCTV — campus and retail lots
  • Fleet and dashcam clips — the same plate tool applies

Occupants visible through glass still need face redaction. Spoken call-outs of a plate need manual audio ranges. We will not help you deblur plates. Detection assistance is described under AI video redaction; residency under offline video redaction.

FAQ

Can I blur a number plate / licence plate the same way?
Yes. Number plate and licence plate are the same region type. Auto-detect proposes boxes; you can also draw or track the plate. The export burns the mask.
Is license plate blurring done online?
No. Detection, tracking, and encode run in the Windows app. We do not offer deblur, and we do not accept uploads.
What if the detector misses a plate in glare or at an angle?
Draw a manual box and track it. Manual selection is supported for every plate, not only as a fallback story.
